The Meaning Behind Kamala Harris’s Fashion Choices
Trigger warning: this article is not a deep dive into Madam Vice President’s accomplishments, qualifications, or policies. But believe me, we’re having those conversations around here too. We understand the tricky optics of covering something “frivolous” like fashion when discussing powerful women. So, why are we talking about the meaning behind Kamala Harris’s fashion choices? Because Armoire’s community of ambitious women is bonded by a desire to dress with intention. It’s a relevant topic here.
For many of us, we’ve embraced clothing rental as a lifestyle choice because we care about sustainable fashion. Additionally, a good portion of us want to support the woman-owned fashion brands that Armoire offers. We know this because we ask women about their motivating factors when they subscribe to our clothing rental service. To us, fashion is anything but frivolous. It’s a dynamic topic that intersects with culture, history, economics, values, and more, making it a subject of considerable importance and relevance.
But enough about us, let’s talk about Kamala Harris.
Harris’s fashion choices are more than just about aesthetics; they are carefully considered decisions that reflect her identity, values, and the statements she wants to make as a public figure and leader. As a woman, there is little room for error in her sartorial choices, and she knows that. It’s no secret that female leaders face more scrutiny regarding their fashion choices than their male counterparts—we all know that (See: Clinton, Hillary).
Dressing with Intention
For her first speech as Vice President-elect in November 2020, Harris wore a white suit to pay homage to the suffragette movement, which used white as a symbol of women’s fight for voting rights. The outfit was seen as a nod to the women who came before her and paved the way for her historic achievement. In 1920, women finally prevailed after a hard-fought, decades-long struggle to simply vote in the US. Over a hundred years later, Harris has gotten closer than anyone to the top job in American politics. The meaning behind Kamala Harris’s fashion choices on that day were heard loud and clear.
On Inauguration Day, she sent another message via her clothing choice. Harris’s purple coat symbolized unity and bipartisanship, as purple is a mix of red and blue, the colors of the two major political parties, of course. After all of the drama around the meaning behind this coat, it was a welcome message.
Harris has worn outfits by designers that reflect her diverse heritage. For instance, she has worn designs by Indian-American designers, acknowledging her South Asian roots. The aforementioned Inauguration coat was part of an ensemble designed by black American designers, another nod to her heritage. These choices are surely purposeful in celebrating her cultural background.
Accessories: Signature Style & Sentimentality
Kamala Harris’s signature pearls are a significant and symbolic accessory connected to her membership in the sorority Alpha Kappa Alpha. AKA is the first historically African American sorority, dating back to 1908. The pearls represent the 20 founders, also known as the “Twenty Pearls,” who established Alpha Kappa Alpha. Pearls were chosen to symbolize the values of AKA, such as elegance, excellence, and refinement. They are a representation of the high standards and achievements that members strive to uphold. By wearing pearls, Kamala honors the support she’s received from her sorority sisterhood.
Even more recognizable is her preference for Converse Chuck Taylor sneakers, particularly during the campaign trail. The meaning behind Kamala Harris’s fashion footwear not only conveys a relatable and approachable image but also reflects her down-to-earth personality and desire to connect with everyday Americans. (Do men need to dress with approachability in mind? That’s a conversation for a different day.) I’ve gone ahead and purchased new Chuck Taylors because I’m one of those everyday Americans—the voting kind. Dear candidates for elected office: it would serve you to try to connect with women like me.
Sustainable Fashion: Will She or Won’t She?
Good news! Harris has shown a preference for sustainable fashion. She’s been seen wearing outfits from designers who prioritize ethical and sustainable practices. This is no coincidence. Through her fashion choices, she subtly but effectively promotes the importance of sustainability, reflecting her broader commitment to environmental and social responsibility.
Harris has a notable record on addressing the climate crisis, emphasizing environmental justice, sustainability, and significant policy measures both as a U.S. Senator and as Vice President. In a speech precisely one year ago, she declared the climate crisis to be “one of the most urgent matters of our time,” adding, “It is clear that the clock is not only ticking, it is banging. And we must act.” If I had to wager, I’d bet we’ll see more sustainable fashion choices at the Resolute Desk if she prevails in November.
The Formula + Meaning Behind Kamala Harris’s Fashion
If she gets there, I also predict women across America will emulate her style. Maybe sustainable fashion will become the norm rather than the exception. Maybe Converse won’t be able to keep up with demand. If you want to get on the bandwagon, let’s talk about how to steal her style.
Harris has been consistent with her style throughout her 30+ years in public service, which tells us she’s comfortable and confident in her look. Her style is often described as professional, polished, and relatable. Overall, Harris’s fashion style is a blend of classic professionalism with modern touches, reflecting her role as a trailblazing leader while staying true to her personal tastes and values.
1. Power Suits
Kamala Harris frequently wears tailored suits in classic colors like black, navy, and gray. These suits are paired with simple blouses or shell tops. Her suits are well-fitted, emphasizing a strong and confident appearance.
2. Solid Colors
While she generally opts for solid, neutral colors, Harris occasionally incorporates bolder colors and subtle patterns. She has been seen in shades like deep purple and royal blue, which convey confidence and authority.
3. Casual Wear
When in more casual settings, Harris’s style remains polished but relaxed. She often opts for well-cut jeans, blazers, and casual tops, maintaining a balance between comfort and professionalism.
Of course, we’re here to make your life easier, so we’ve gone ahead and created The Kamala Collection. Whomever you vote for, rent something special for November 5th.
