Lu Barnes x Armoire: A Stylish New Chapter in Sustainability
Professional soccer is about more than just what happens on the field—it’s about leadership, legacy, and impact. Few players embody that more than Lauren “Lu” Barnes, longtime defender and captain of the Seattle Reign (formerly OL Reign). With over a decade in the NWSL, hundreds of appearances, and a reputation as one of the most consistent defenders in league history, Lu has become a cornerstone of women’s soccer in Seattle and beyond. Now, she’s channeling her leadership into a new arena: fashion sustainability. Meet the Lu Barnes x Armoire Collection.

A Legacy Beyond the Pitch
Lu Barnes has played over 180 matches for the Seattle Reign, making her one of the longest-tenured players in the NWSL. Her reliability in the back line has anchored the team through championships, playoff runs, and international competitions. Fans know her not only for her fearless play, but also for her strong voice off the pitch. Lu has consistently used her platform to advocate for environmental causes.
Before launching into fashion, Lu was already laying the groundwork for planet-forward activism. She created the “Make a Difference” (M.A.D.) Travel Kits—eco-friendly kits filled with reusable items like water bottles, utensils, toiletries, and protein snacks for her Reign teammates. Lu also helped the Reign measure and reduce their carbon, plastic, and water footprints. This work reached into locker rooms, team facilities, and bubble protocols to embed greener habits from the ground up. Her leadership extended further through partnerships with organizations like Common Goal and Players for the Planet, and by pledging 1% of her salary to empower nonprofits like Football For Her—giving back while guiding the game toward sustainability.
As an Armoire member and a dedicated advocate for environmental responsibility, Lu has consistently aligned her choices with her values, making her transition into sustainable fashion a natural next step.
“Sustainability requires innovation and community, and this project captures both.”

The Lu Barnes x Armoire Collaboration
This new partnership, Lu Barnes x Armoire, is about more than clothes. It’s about rewriting what it means to have an “endless closet.” Pieces from Lu’s own collection, including gear from her years with the Reign, are being upcycled through Armoire’s upcycling program. Instead of gathering dust or being discarded, her gear is reimagined into one-of-a-kind pieces that Armoire members can rent or purchase.
By merging Lu’s passion for the planet with Armoire’s mission of empowering women through fashion, the collaboration offers a rare opportunity: a chance to wear clothing with a story. In some ways, Lu Barnes x Armoire brings a modern twist to something women have always done—share clothes as a way to connect, inspire, and support one another. In that spirit, Seattle Reign coach Laura Harvey and teammates Jess Fishlock and Angharad James have already borrowed from the collection for game day.

Inside Armoire’s Upcycling Department
Armoire has long believed that fashion should be fun, flexible, and conscious. Our upcycling department is dedicated to reducing waste and giving clothing a second life. Every garment that enters the program is carefully examined for potential—whether that means repairs, alterations, or full transformations. The goal is simple: extend the life of clothes while keeping style at the forefront.
The Lu Barnes x Armoire project is a shining example of this mission in action. By turning her gear into wearable fashion, we’re proving that clothes can carry legacy, inspire confidence, and help build a more sustainable future.

Why Lu Barnes x Armoire Matters
Sustainability in fashion isn’t a trend—it’s a necessity. The fashion industry is one of the world’s largest polluters, and Armoire’s upcycling initiative directly address the problem by maximizing the lifespan of garments. Partnering with someone like Lu, who has dedicated much of her career to advocating for environmental responsibility, underscores the importance of making conscious choices every day.

Join the Movement
The Lu Barnes x Armoire collaboration is about more than style. It’s about community, impact, and legacy. Just as Lu has inspired generations of fans on the field, she now inspires us to view our closets differently. Together, we can dress with purpose, rent with pride, and leave the world a little better than we found it.
