There is a Fashion Environmental Impact bill HB 1107 that is under review making companies take responsibility for their supply chain, label harmful chemicals in their products, and be transparent about overproduction. Our Written Testimony in Support of HB 1107
To: Members of the Environment & Energy House Committee,
I am writing to express my strong support for HB 1107, which aims to address critical environmental issues in the fashion industry by enforcing supply chain accountability, requiring harmful chemical disclosures, and increasing transparency around overproduction.
The apparel industry is one of the largest contributors to pollution globally, yet it remains largely unregulated. Textile dyeing alone is the second-largest polluter of water globally.
This bill represents a crucial step toward protecting public health by ensuring companies take responsibility for their practices.
Reasons to Support HB 1107:
- Environmental Impact: The fashion industry produces 92 million tons of waste each year. Every second, the equivalent of one garbage truck of textiles is landfilled or burned. Transparency requirements in HB 1107 will encourage more sustainable practices.
- Public Health: 25% of all chemicals produced globally are used in the textile industry, including azo dyes, heavy metals, and formaldehyde—which are harmful to human health. The European Union restricts over 1,600 substances in textiles, while the U.S. restricts only about 30 chemicals. Labeling requirements will empower individuals to make safer purchasing decisions.
- Corporate Accountability: The fashion industry produces 100 billion garments annually, yet 30-40% of these garments are never sold. Holding companies responsible for overproduction will reduce exploitation of the environment.
In 2016, I founded Armoire, a clothing rental company that promotes sustainability in fashion and aims to change consumer habits, thus reducing demand for irresponsible production.
